Understanding DNS and DHCP Servers

Knowing what these systems can do and how they interact with other systems will ensure that you are always aware of your network’s environment, what can affect it, and what is needed to optimize your network infrastructure’s potential. AVIXA’s own Coran Smith lead the discussion along with Senior Staff Instructor/Technical Advisor for AVIXA Paul Streffon, and Google Senior Corporate Operations Engineer Scott Josephson.

Some of the key elements that were covered:

  • Static is useful when you want to assign a specific IP address everytime. Dynamic system computer handles all IP addresses and won’t use any duplicates.
  • DHCP automatically assigns IP addresses – it’s less formal and requires less management.
  • Reserve DHCP is the middle ground between the two options. Which one you use depends on how large your network is going to scale and how large of a staff you have to support it.
  • Partner with your IT department and network team so the network rules are defined.
  • Make sure to plan security – if someone gets in, how do you stop them from getting anywhere else in the system
  • Avoid putting devices on WiFi because of quality and security issues.
